The flight up the long and winding hill back to Sanctuary not only exhausted Evie, it terrified her. She ran for as long as she could, then took a break, sucking in air and staring back down the road through eyes blurred and stinging with sweat. It was the threat of seeing or hearing a car roaring up behind her that had her in a near panic. Whatever had happened to Bobby, it was sure to have pissed him off and she had it in her mind that once he made it out of that dark back, he’d find himself a car and come looking to finish what he’d started.

Or worse. She couldn’t stop herself from imagining that the painful stitch in her side might be similar to what it felt like to be stabbed.

If he caught up to her, she could try to placate him. Tell him she would consider being his girl. Just until they made it back home. But maybe he wouldn’t be satisfied with that now. Not after what happened. Maybe he never would have been. It occurred to her that maybe he’d planned that little ruse in the store with more in mind than just making her his girl. That heavy breathing, the insistency and eagerness, he’d definitely wanted more. Would he have forced himself on her if she hadn’t gotten out? It seemed that way, and if he’d done that, he’d only have two options: kill her and hide her body or run. The more she thought about it, the more she believed he’d intended to kill her the whole time. It was the safest thing for him to do.

The realization how close she just came to death sent a shudder through her body. She shivered on the roadway, a block from home, and wondered if she should go back at all.. What would happen to her if Bobby came storming in looking for her? Would Meryl and the other two men protect her?

No, she thought. If they even stopped him from hurting me at all, it would be to protect him, not me.

She could go to Ira and tell him what happened. That might stamp a seal on Bobby’s fate, which would mean she wouldn’t have to worry about him anymore. But it would also mean that she would be responsible for somebody dying in a barbaric public execution and she wasn’t sure she could handle that. Surely no one deserved that The horrible torture, the screaming crowd, that wasn’t justice. Not to mention, there was no way to really be sure what Bobby’s intentions had been.

Besides, even with him gone, that would still leave her with Meryl and the others, and they weren’t fond of her as it was. If she got Bobby tortured and killed, she might not be any better off than she was now.

Would Ira listen and protect her? Or would he just see the dramatic ranting of a teenager? The best she could hope for was for him
